Road Closures
Longford County Council may temporarily close public roads, including for events or to carry out works. This requires the publication of two notices in a newspaper circulating in the locality of the proposed road closure:
- A notice of intention to temporarily close a road. The public will have at least three days (from the notice's date of publication) to make a written objection to Longford County Council. The Council must consider all objections received and not withdrawn.
- A notice of the decision to temporarily close a road.
Apply for a Road Closure
A Temporary Road Closure Licence application must be submitted to Longford County Council at least 6 weeks before the proposed road closure. A map or detailed sketch illustrating the road(s) that may be affected should be submitted with the application. Applicants must liaise with the Area Engineer and the Garda Síochána and must make reasonable efforts to notify any residents who may be affected by a proposed road closure.
If the application is successful, Longford County Council must place a minimum of two advertisements in a newspaper circulating in the locality of the proposed road closures. The applicant is responsible for any costs associated with these advertisements. A minimum €250 deposit must accompany each application and this will be used to cover all or part of the advertising costs.
If any observations or objections regarding the proposed road closure are received the applicant will be notified. It is the responsibility of the applicant to resolve any issues that arise.
Further terms and conditions apply, see Road Closure Application Form to apply and for further information.
