Section 38Legislative Procedure for Traffic Calming Measures under the Road Traffic Act 1994
Under the Road Traffic Act 1994 (As Amended), a road authority may, in the interest of the safety and convenience of road users, provide such traffic calming measures as they consider desirable in respect of public roads in their charge.
“Traffic calming measures” for the purposes of this legislation can include such items as bus facilities such as lay-bys, accessible bus stops and bus shelters.
Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994 (As Amended) of the following scheme:
Active Travel Scheme, LD/26/0013 - Colehill NS School Zone and traffic calming project
Longford Co. Co. intend to carry out traffic calming works at Colehill National School Longford. The proposed project is intended to improve road safety for pupils, school staff, parents, and all road users in the vicinity of the school.
The proposed works will include:
- Construction of two speed ramps on the approaches to the School, as outlined on the scheme drawing.
- Installation of associated road markings and Speed Ramp ahead signage.
- Installation of pencil bollards where required.
- Alterations to the existing roadway and all ancillary works necessary to facilitate the scheme.
The proposed traffic calming measures are designed to reduce vehicle speeds in the vicinity of the school and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Drawings and particulars of the proposed scheme are available for inspection at the Planning Counter, Longford County Council, Aras An Chontae, Great Water Street, Longford, Opening Hours: Monday to Friday 10am-1pm and 2pm-4pm from the 5th of Oct to the 20th of October 2026 inclusive and on the following page Public Consultations.

Submissions and observations in relation to the proposed works may be emailed to activetravel@longfordcoco.ie up to 5pm on 20th October 2026, and also be made in writing and posted using the following addressed “Submissions, Active Travel Scheme, Colehill Nation School Ramp Project, Longford County Council, 2 Church Street, Longford N39 W1X7” and must also be received on or before 5pm on the 20th October 2026.
Please make your submission by one of the above methods only. Only submissions received as set out above will be considered. Submissions cannot be accepted in any other format or to any other postal address. All submissions received will be considered and will form part of the Chief Executive’s report on the public consultation process. It should be noted that the Freedom of Information Act, 1997 -2006 (amended) applies to all records held by Longford County Council.
