Traffic Calming along the R396 at Abbelyara Village, Abbeylara, Co. Longford.

Longford County Council in exercise of the powers conferred on it under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994 hereby gives notice that it has prepared a Scheme for the provision of traffic calming and associated works at the following location:

R396 at Abbelyara Village, Abbeylara, Co. Longford – As part of the 2026 Community Involvement Scheme, Longford County Council intends to install traffic calming measures to improve road and pedestrian safety along the R-396 at Abbeylara Village, with the primary objective of providing traffic calming through the village, improved pedestrian access to the local facilities and improved bus stop facilities.

 

The proposed works as detailed on the attached drawing (Appendix 1),

involve junction tightening and reconfiguration of the roadway at the crossroads in the centre of the village to encourage a reduction in speed of vehicular traffic through the village whilst improving safety for pedestrians and vulnerable road users. The narrowing of the road at the crossroads and on both approaches will serve to reduce vehicular approach speeds which will improve safety. This will also improve the pedestrian experience crossing the road at or near the crossroads. It will also provide an opportunity to improve the bus stop facilities for the local link bus service at this location.

The proposed works, include the installation of new kerbing, bus stop kerbing, footpaths, improved pedestrian crossing points, widening of existing footpaths and landscaping to improve safety and reduce speed.

All submissions received will be considered and will form part of the Chief Executive’s report on the public consultation process.
